Just last week my kid asked if he could wash down a cookie with a soda. My registered dietitian brain nearly exploded at that request. While I do let my kids have treats, pairing sugar with sugar is a hard no in my book.
That being said, I can’t blame him for trying.
Kids have a preference for sweets (and some adults do too). It is simply how we are wired genetically. Sweet foods tend to be more calorie-dense, provide energy in the form of carbohydrates, and stimulate the pleasure center of the brain, so it is no surprise kids love anything sweet. Bitter foods tend to be poisonous, so we have a natural aversion to them.
If I would let him, my son would skip meals all together and eat a diet of donuts, lemonade, and ice cream. Obviously, to grow and thrive, all kids need healthier food.
As a parent, my job is to cook balanced meals and try to get him to at least eat some nutritious foods. For many parents, even me, this can be a real challenge.
But, teaching kids to become healthy eaters comes when you work with a child’s taste preferences, not against them.
This is why gummy vitamins for kids are the best invention ever, in my opinion. While they can’t replace a healthy diet, gummy vitamins are a great way to sneak some nutrition into what your kid might think is a sweet treat! Win-win!
Finding the Best Gummy Vitamin for Kids
When you are looking for a good gummy vitamin for kids there are a few things to consider.
First, look for a vitamin that contains certain nutrients kids could use more of vitamins that may be lacking in their daily diet. A common nutrient many of us need more of is vitamin D, as it plays a role in immunity, bone health, and even maintaining a healthy weight. So be sure the gummy contains a good dose of that essential nutrient.
Second, what health concerns are you trying to address? There are many different types of gummy vitamins that serve different functions. While a multivitamin is a great place to start, there are also many gummy vitamins for kids that address other health concerns, from immunity to blood sugar control.
Keeping kids healthy in multiple ways is particularly essential right now, during times of COVID and other illnesses.
While gummy vitamins should be tasty, kids don’t need any additional sugar in their diets. Look for gummies that either contain no added sugar or only 1-2 grams per gummy.
Also, consider gummies free of artificial flavors and colors.
